02. THE STORY
In the year 2022, the Virtual Reality Massive Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Game (VRMMORPG) SWORD ART ONLINE was released. Using the latest technology, players were able to control their virtual avatars with their minds. But on the day of the game's release, the creator of the game prevented players from logging out. A challenge was soon issued, asking players to clear the game, if they wished to leave. However, should their avatars die while inside the game, the players would perish with them.

TOWN OF BEGINNINGS The Town of Beginnings is the start of every player's adventure. It's here, in this pleasant city, that the new and adventurous can meet up with other like minds. Shops, inns, training grounds, and even a plaza in the center of the 'wheel-and-spoke' pattern of the town, makes this place a newbie paradise!
CLARKSWOOD MEADOWS Surrounding the Town of Beginnings lies the gentle hills of Clarkswood Meadows. Tall grass and few trees define this beginner's expanse, and offers new players a chance to get their bearings on low level foes. The view from the top is said to be breathtaking and appears worth the climb. Furthest from the town lies kobold-infested caverns, their appearance enough to ward off even the bravest of players.
BEHLOREAN TIMBERLAND Named after Nature's most ardent supporter, Behlor, the Behlorean Timberland is a moderate expanse of woods that stretches between Lake Esmerelda and the Barrow Downs. Although relatively peaceful, there have been reports of aggressive foes in the area. Adventurers looking to hone their survival skills will find plenty of challenges within the cool shade of the Timberlands.
LAKE ESMERELDA Lake Esmerelda sits on the northernmost edge of Clarkswood Meadows, and extends as far as the eye can see. The water, still as glass, reflects the hills surrounding it. From the end of the pier, an island can be seen, sitting in the middle of the lake. An island shrouded in mystery... Who knows what sort of foes lie in wait in the shadows of Esmerelda!
COTTONWOOD COVE Nestled between two verdant hills on the fringes of Lake Esmerelda, lies a deep inlet of water known as Cottonwood Cove. The shoreline is dotted with fishing huts and humble gardens, presumably occupied by local NPCs. Travel between this small village and the Town of Beginnings is sparse, which in turn makes for a peaceful atmosphere. Adventurers can take a brief rest here before moving on to more dangerous areas.
THE BARROW DOWNS The Barrow Downs is a collection of hills and stone monoliths that dot the outer regions of Floor 1. Although the area is generally regarded off-limits, adventurers are free to enter as they please. Beware, though, beneath the warm green hills lie a network of boxy, hewn crypts, which houses unknown foes and traps, lying in wait for the unsuspecting traveler.
URBUS Sorrowful oboe themed BGM is heard throughout this town. Urbus is your average town with houses, shops - and even a church. In the center of the town lies an arch of neatly stacked stones, acting as the transfer gate between Urbus and the Town of Beginnings.
THE HERMIT'S MOUNTAIN A mountain range riddled with small caverns and underground streams. Various predatory animals roam the mountain range. At the summit of the highest mountain, an old hermit lives, skilled in the ways of martial arts. Those who visit his small hut may ask for his knowledge, but once you begin his training, you must finish it or forever be marked a lowly rat.
COW FIELDS A green piece of grassland in the layered mountains. Thanks to the cattle grazing here, the area gives the feeling of a relaxing pasture, thus earning the second floor its nickname of the "Cow Floor".
MAROME VILLAGE A small village southeast of Urbus. This village is your average mundane village except for its trading halls. People from all over Aincrad gather here for business. Other than the great market, the village boasts a pretty nice tavern, as well.
SLIME CANYON Laying across this ten meter deep canyon is a natural stone bridge. Slime based monsters live at the bottom of this canyon. If one is sufficiently leveled they can survive the fall, but as the only road out is on the far southern end of the canyon, getting back up can be difficult.
IRON MINES A large mountain range riddled with abandoned mines. The once prosperous mines were shut down when various creatures massacred the miners. Their bones can still be found across the shafts. Further into the mountain lies a labyrinth of caves. Without a map, one would easily get lost within the twisting caverns. The external areas of the mountain range are not hospitable, either. Crumbling cliffs, falling rocks, and deathly winds are common place. Walking along the narrow paths may very well be a death wish.
